A former British Army soldier from Milton Keynes who was left partially paralyzed after a ski accident completed the London Marathon in 2011 — a powerful story of faith, resilience, recovery, and hope. Read his inspiring journey.

Life-Changing Accident While Serving in the Army
In 2000, while serving in the British Army, Alexander Laing (36) was involved in a skiing accident that left him paralyzed down the left side of his body. The injury caused long-term difficulties including:
-
Loss of coordination
-
Vision problems
-
Speech challenges
-
Chronic fatigue
Doctors expected Alex to face severe physical limitations for the rest of his life. For a time, the future seemed uncertain and recovery appeared unlikely.
But Alex refused to give up.
A Journey of Faith, Recovery, and New Purpose
During his recovery journey, Alex experienced a renewed sense of faith and hope that transformed his outlook on life. Instead of accepting defeat, he rebuilt his strength step-by-step and rediscovered his sense of purpose.
He went on to:
-
Start his own gardening business in Milton Keynes
-
Commit to intense physical training
-
Set himself a goal many considered impossible — to run the London Marathon
Completing the London Marathon — A Test of Courage
In April 2011, Alex crossed the finish line of the London Marathon — a milestone he describes as both a physical and spiritual victory.
Reflecting on the experience, he said:
“I’m amazed I managed to complete it. Even though I faced fatigue, I saw it as my faith being tested.”
The race became more than an athletic achievement — it was a symbol of perseverance, recovery, and inner strength. Alex also marked a deeply personal milestone at mile 23, a moment he describes as historic in his journey of overcoming adversity.
A Message of Hope for Others Facing Hardship
Alex believes his story is not just about survival — but about inspiring others:
“There’s hope even after tragedy. Since inviting Jesus into my life, I’ve discovered a deeper sense of hope, and I believe that’s something many people today are searching for.”
His story continues to encourage people across Milton Keynes and beyond, especially those facing illness, disability, or personal struggle.
